About
Climate change brings many complex challenges and issues: how to handle the energy sector, carbon emissions, food production, landscape management or the most imminent climate threats, etc. What questions does the future pose and what steps and actions should be taken in response? Musicians Václav Havelka and Pan Thorarensen decided to seek inspiration for the future world with the help of what they know best – sound.
Together they embark on an artistic/research expedition. Accompanied by philosopher Lukáš Likavčan and a duo of field-recordists Sara Pinheiro and Magnús Bergsson they venture into areas filled with ambiguity and unsuspected risks. Their special sound instruments are able to capture the innermost technological processes and phenomena that our ears can’t hear.
The expedition takes place in Iceland and the Czech Republic. To gain new insights and knowledge, the musicians explore the environments of the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant with CarbFix underground carbon dioxide storage technology, the Búðarháls hydroelectric power plant, the Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon and the Fagradalsfjall volcano. In Czechia, the expedition visits the Tušimice coal-fired power plant, the Žarošice CO2-Spicer repository, the Kaly aquaponic farm, and the Milovice rewilding reserve.
What future scenarios in the area of climate, power engineering, agriculture and landscape management can emerge from sound? What else can sound tell us beyond what we can see? You can join our expedition through an audio archive, field notes from our travels, a music album and a documentary film, which we will be publishing on our website.
